REMOTE AREA MEDICAL (RAM)
  There were 2,408 patients, 1,467 volunteers and 7,279 patient encounters during the 3 day Remote Area Medical in Wise County, Va. Seven Frontier Health staff participated during the weekend, and others were part of the year-long planning for the event. Staff were accessible for crisis services, provided information and helped with volunteer and patient registration.
   Other events are being planned in Sullivan and Unicoi counties of Tennessee. RAM provides free dental, eye, and medical care, also a fast track to obtaining eye glasses and a special appointment for a mammogram.

Survivors of Suicide Support Groups are in Tennessee and Virginia.

   The Tennessee group meets from 6-8 p.m. the 4th Monday of each month at Boones Creek Christian Church. For the Tennessee group, call Linda Phipps Harrold (423) 361-2087. The Virginia group meets at 6 p.m. the 4th Thursday of each month. For the Virginia group, call Bill Russell at (276) 346-1641.

Virginia Regional Suicide Prevention Coalitions

    The Lee County Suicide Prevention Coalition formed to raise awareness and determine the available resources in the Lee County community for suicide survivors. The group meets at 2 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month at Lee County Behavioral Health Services in Jonesville. Call Bill or Phyllis Russell at (276) 346-1641. The Wise County Suicide Prevention Coalition meets the second Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at Baptist Student Center at UVA-Wise. please contact Rica Maralit at (276) 523-8357. The Scott County Suicide Prevention Coalition meets at 3:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at Addington Hall in Duffield. Please contact Amy Bledsoe at (276) 431-4370.

APA Trainings A Review of New & Old Medications for Psychiatric Conditions
  
Frontier Health is offering an APA training, “A Review of New & Old Medications for Psychiatric Conditions,” with C. Allen Musil, M.D., on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Millennium Centre in Johnson City.
   “A Review of New & Old Medications for Psychiatric Conditions,” will review major classes of psychotropic medications and what’s new in these classes of drugs, a discussion of the reasoning behind their use - when they might be used or not used, and why one might choose one drug over another. This presentation will give participants a basic understanding and approach to medications - their risk and benefits. It will be fast paced, with many clinical stories to accent the presentation.

   Frontier Health is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Frontier Health maintains responsibility for the program and its content. Frontier Health is also an approved educational provider for NAADC #683.

CCDHH Sign Language Courses

Helping to Bridge Gap

   When spoken word is not heard, any gap in communication makes daily living difficult. When this communication gap is closed through sign language, the more than 22 million Americans who are deaf are given new opportunities and chances to lead a more fulfilling life.
    Frontier Health’s Communication Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is working to narrow the gap by offering courses in American Sign Language. For more on upcoming trainings, call CCDHH call 423-434-0447, or TTY 423-434-0448.

Frontier Health Greenwood Challenge Instructor Training at right. Greenwood Challenge is a four-hour ropes course that is a carefully planned outdoor learning environment. Both mental and physical problem-solving activities are designed to resolve group challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
